Insurance claims data shows Halloween is one of the worst days of the year for homeowners and auto claims related to theft and vandalism. What’s more, with increased visitors, you may be held liable if someone has an accident on your property due to your negligence.
But this Halloween doesn’t have to be a fright. Protecting yourself and your belongings with proper insurance can drastically reduce your risk for an expensive liability claim. Check your insurance policies for gaps and deductible details to make sure you’re not left on the hook for damage bills.
Beyond the potential for injuries on your property or damages to your property by trick-or-treaters, there are other concerns you may want to consider …
Fire – If a candle or electrically powered decoration causes a fire, any damage will be covered by standard homeowners and renters insurance policies.
Car Accidents Involving Trick-or-Treaters – According to the National Safety Council, children are more than twice as likely to be hit and killed by a car on Halloween than on other nights of the year. Halloween presents a major safety concern if you are driving that night for any reason. However, you may want to review your state’s minimum car insurance coverage requirements. All states except Florida require bodily injury liability coverage, but most states’ minimums may not be enough to cover a more extensive injury for which you may be liable.
While some mishaps are unavoidable, some basic steps can help ensure your holiday is safe and fun:
- Ensure that your property is well-lit with outside lights, especially walkways. Not going to be home this Halloween? Turn lights off to discourage visitors from approaching your home.
- Clear any debris from the perimeter of your home that could cause someone to trip and fall.
- Keep flammables out of the reach of small children and away from flammable materials. Consider using battery-operated candles instead.
- Practice pet safety – keep your furry friends inside and away from trick-or-treaters.
- Park your car safely in the garage or a well-lit area.
With a few safety precautions and up-to-date insurance policies, you can relax and enjoy the upcoming holiday. Check to make sure your policies cover these common Halloween-related concerns, so you won’t have to worry about a damage claim or a lawsuit arising from the night.
Happy Halloween!
